Loblaw Stores Get moviecube DVD Kiosks

BRAMPTON, Ont. - Loblaw Cos., Ltd. here has entered into an enterprise-wide agreement with Houston-based DVD rental kiosk company The New Release (TNR), to place moviecube DVD rental kiosks throughout the grocery operator's locations.

TNR expects to install kiosks in over 350 Loblaw supermarkets by July 2008. The rollout comes after a successful nine-month test of kiosks at Loblaw locations across Canada.

"Moviecube has the dominant position in the grocery channel in the U.S., so expanding into Canada, where movie rental customers have shown a [voracious] appetite for DVD rentals, is a much anticipated move for us," noted TNR president and c.e.o. Tim Belton in a statement.

Added Loblaw v.p. public relations Elizabeth Margles, "We have seen great response from our customers to the kiosks and the DVD rental experience during the nine month test period."

TNR recently received an $11 million infusion from Washington-based institutional investor MCG Capital Corp., which will be used to expand its footprint in the grocery market in the United States and Canada. The company operates over 2,100 kiosks in the United States in such grocery chains as Kroger, HEB, Publix, Albertsons, Dillon's, Food-4-Less, Fry's, King Soopers, Quality Food Centers, Ralph's, Roundy's/Pick 'N Save and Schnucks, and expects to add at least 650 more in 2008.

Loblaw is Canada's largest food distributor and a leading provider of general merchandise products, drug store, and financial products and services.
