Loblaw Names New C.O.O.

TORONTO -- Loblaw Cos., Ltd. here said Friday it had appointed Dalton Phillips to be its new c.o.o, effective Jan. 10. Phillips, 38, succeeds e.v.p. and chief retail officer Dave Jeffs, who is resigning after 28 years with the company.

Since 2005 Phillips has been c.e.o. of upscale Irish department store Brown Thomas. According to Bloomberg News Brown Thomas is part of Wittington Investments, Ltd., which is controlled by the Weston family, the majority shareholders of George Weston, Ltd., Loblaw's parent company.

A graduate of University College Dublin and Harvard Business School, Phillips went on to hold progressively senior positions in New Zealand and Australia at retailer Jardine Matheson, eventually rising to become regional director of the company's Spanish supermarket division. Phillips also spearheaded revitalization and growth across a wide range of formats within Jardine Matheson's Dairy Farm retail business.

In 1998 Phillips joined Wal-Mart's international division, where he held a range of senior commercial positions in South America and became of v.p. and c.o.o. in Germany

Phillips will report directly to Loblaw executive chairman Galen G. Weston.

The new hire comes as Loblaw, faced with declining profits of late, is streamlining its organization by redesigning processes and structures.

Loblaw has over 134,000 full-time and part-time employees and more than 1,000 corporate and franchised stores across Canada.
