Liquor to Be Sold in One Pa. Supermarket
HARRISBURG, Pa. -- In a historic first, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) here said Wednesday that it has signed an agreement with Kulpsville, Pa.-based Clemens Family Markets to sell liquor directly to consumers at a grocery store.
The Clemens store, located on Skippack Pike in Blue Bell, will host one of the state's first-ever Wine and Spirits stores not located in a self-contained facility. The 5,643-square-foot in-house market will be run by state employees using LCB registers, the state said.
The PLCB didn't announce the launch date of the store at Clemens. LCB chairman Jonathan Newman said the lease "represents one of the most significant and exciting initiatives in the LCB's history since the introduction of self-serve stores in 1969."
Prior to 1969, consumers had to fill out a checklist of products that was handed to a clerk who retrieved liquor from a stockroom.
The LCB said that it plans to add three other stores inside supermarkets within the next year in several locations around the state. In June, the state opened four "discount outlet stores" near its borders with neighboring states in an attempt to keep business within Pennsylvania.
Earlier this year, the state introduced Sunday hours at 10 percent of its stores.
Clemens operates 20 stores in eastern Pennsylvania.
