Leevers Deepens its Roots

Leevers Foods Inc. is purchasing Wally’s Supermarket in Devils Lake, N.D., from the Nash Finch Co., giving Leevers its second location in its headquarters community.

Leevers Foods is owned and operated by second-generation owner Robert Leevers and his two children, James Leevers and Beth Leevers-Dunn. Founded more than 70 years ago by Robert’s father, Norman Leevers, Leevers Foods has built a strong tradition of providing the finest quality grocery, meat and produce to local shoppers, as well as a commitment to delivering outstanding customer service. The grocer operates six locations in North Dakota.

“It is exciting for us to own a second supermarket in Devils Lake, where we opened our very first store,” said Robert Leevers, company president. “We are grateful for the support the Devils Lake community has shown us over our history, and are pleased to be able to offer them a second location to shop with us. We are excited about our new partnership with Nash Finch, another company rooted in Devils Lake. Our companies together have over 200 years of service to consumers, and we are excited to continue that tradition of offering outstanding service to our customers. We appreciate Nash Finch’s dedication to the success of independent supermarket retailers and the opportunity provided for us to grow our business.”

Alec C. Covington, Nash Finch president and CEO, said occasionally transitioning corporate-owned stores to independent owners can help customers grow their business. “Here, we concluded that the best way to serve the consumers in Devils Lake was to partner with the Leevers, the local experts who live and work in Devils Lake, and have a proven track record of outstanding service and dedication to their customers and their communities,” Covington said. “We will focus on our core strength: offering superior service and making our world-class private label program – Our Family – available to all Leevers customers. We appreciate all the hard work that the associates of Wally’s Supermarket demonstrate each and every day, and look forward to a continued relationship with the store as a Nash Finch customer.”

Minneapolis-based Nash Finch Co. is a food distributor that serves independent retailers and military commissaries in 36 states, the District of Columbia, Europe, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Azores, Bahrain and Egypt. The company also owns and operates a base of retail stores, primarily supermarkets under the Econofoods, Family Thrift Center, Avanaza, Family Fresh Markets, Savers Choice, Wally’s Supermarkets and Sun Mart banners.
