Latino Nutrition Coalition Established
BOSTON -- Oldways, a nonprofit food issues think tank here, has formed a Latino Nutrition Coalition in response to concerns that were voiced last week during the second Oldways Preservation Trust Latin American Diet Summit in Mexico City.
Recognizing the serious health problems affecting Latinos that stem from being overweight or obese, an "A List" of leading nutrition scientists released a scientific report documenting the specific health problems, and declaring the need for a new program aimed at the segment of the population most at risk -- urbanized Latinos in the U.S. and in Latin American countries.
The new Latino Nutrition Coalition is modeled on Oldways' other successful initiatives, such as the Whole Grains Council.
Manufacturers that have pledged financial support to inaugurate the Latino Nutrition Coalition include Mission Foods, a leading manufacturer of tortillas, and charter sponsor of the Summit. "I believe in action, and in doing the right thing," said Asima Syed, s.v.p. of marketing for Mission Foods. "Mission is committed to providing seed funding for this Coalition, and to bringing industry together to help improve the health of Latinos."
Richard Waycott, president and c.e.o. of the Almond Board of California, another sponsor of the Summit, said, "The Almond Board has supported Oldways for many years because they consistently communicate sensible and realistic nutrition messages. We look forward to continuing our support through the new Latino Nutrition Coalition."
