Largest-ever Food City Opens in Kingsport, TN

ABINGDON, Va. -- Customers in Kingsport, Tenn. got their first look at the largest Food City supermarket ever yesterday, as the chain celebrated the grand opening its latest 55,000-square-foot store.

The new superstore was constructed on the same site as a previous Food City unit that was demolished earlier in the summer.

The Food City is the banner for K-VA-T Food Stores, Inc., a privately owned regional grocer that operates 95 retail outlets throughout southeast Kentucky, southwest Virginia, and northeast Tennessee.

The new store features a first for Food City; a lower- and upper-level sit-down cafE. The upper level is equipped with a demonstration kitchen and meeting facilities with a seating capacity of 100-plus, which Food City will make available to area civic groups.

The new store also includes full-service seafood, and a meat department staffed with meatcutters to hand-cut steaks and other fresh meat items to order. The department will also offer a wide variety of pre-marinated and seasoned oven-ready products, in addition to a complete selection of top-quality meats that are all-natural with no solutions added. Certified Angus Beef is also in the assortment, the chain said.

Other store features include a floral boutique; video department; bakery/deli with a hot food bar; pharmacy; and expanded grocery, frozen food, produce, and health & beauty care departments.

Additionally, a ValuCare Health Clinic is now located beside the pharmacy.

The store is equipped with four self-checkouts.

To complete the package, the location was outfitted with a new interior design concept, including department-coordinated floor tiling, large department signage, and a new storewide color scheme.
