La. Seafood Board Organizes Seafood Recovery Tour

NEW ORLEANS -- The Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board (LSPMB) based here will assemble elected officials, representatives of the seafood industry and agencies involved in recovery efforts today to assess recent hurricane damage and strategize on recovery.

LSPMB will charter a bus to Empire, La., to view damage and recovery efforts in progress. Key staff members from the offices of U.S. Senators Mary Landrieu (D-La.) and David Vitter (R-La.), and U.S. Representatives Allen Boyd (D-Fla.) and Charles Melancon (D-La.), are joining members of the state House and Senate Natural Resource committees on this fact-gathering tour into an area of severe devastation for the Louisiana seafood industry. The assessment team also includes state and federal agencies, parish leaders, fisheries researchers, restaurateurs, fishermen, seafood processors and marketing specialists.

LSPMB executive director Ewell Smith said, "Really, the box has collapsed. We are pulling out all the stops to construct action plans to rebuild -- and we are hopeful. Given the resources and character of those who've built the Louisiana seafood industry, the potential for reinvention is very strong."
