Kroger/Michigan Enters New Michigan Markets
LIVONIA, Mich. -- The Kroger Co. of Michigan will purchase the assets of Dave and Tom Johnston's IGA stores in Frankenmuth and Bridgeport, Mich., in conjunction with the chain's pledge to spend $185 million over the next three years to update and expand its store base in southeastern Michigan, according to Jon Flora, president of the Great Lakes Kroger division.
The Johnston Family have owned and operated the Frankenmuth IGA for 53 years and the Bridgeport IGA for more than 10 years and will continue to operate stores in Vassar, Chesaning, and Imlay City.
"We are very pleased to have the opportunity to become part of the Frankenmuth and Bridgeport communities," Flora said, noting that the stores' associates will have the opportunity to become part of Kroger's 13,000 workforce that serves over 1.4 million customers weekly in southeastern Michigan.
The Cincinnati-based retailer, which operates 2,488 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 32 states under roughly two dozen banners, will operate the two stores under its flagship Kroger banner. Purchase agreements between Kroger and the Johnsons are expected to close in late April with stores reopening shortly thereafter.
