Kroger Unit Said Shopping for Sites in Sacramento

CINCINNATI -- Kroger Co.'s Fred Meyer chain is reportedly scouting Sacramento, Calif., for locations, amid reports that it is considering breaking into Northern California - again.

The Portland, Ore.-based Kroger subsidiary has 128 locations, but none in California since closing its one and only store, in Chico, 11 years ago. Fred Meyer gave up on California after operating that Chico store for five years. After suffering from costly strikes in the Portland area, the chain sold off the store as well as three parcels in Greater Sacramento and Redding, after the company.

Fred Meyer spokeswoman Melinda Merrill confirmed the scouting activity with a local business journal, but then downplayed it. "We're just always looking at opportunities. It's kind of a constant activity for us," she said.
