Kroger, Redner's, Food Lion Add Support to Family Day

CINCINNATI, READING, Pa. and SALISBURY, N.C - The Kroger Co., Redner's Warehouse Markets, and Food Lion, Inc., have joined the retailers working with The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University to celebrate the sixth annual "Family Day - A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children," that will be marked on Monday, Sept. 25.

Food Lion said it is supporting and encouraging Family Day participation by making customers aware with store signs and intercom announcements, radio advertisements, Family Day themed sales flyers, and special prices on traditional family meal items, such as pasta products.

"Parents who take and maintain an active role in their children's lives can help their kids make good decisions and avoid substance abuse," said Rick Anicetti, Food Lion president and c.e.o. "This is why Food Lion encourages parents to make family meals and table conversations part of the family's daily routine."

Launched by CASA in 2001, Family Day is a growing national effort to prevent substance abuse in kids and teens by encouraging parental engagement and increased parent-child communication through the simple act of having dinner together frequently. CASA's research has consistently shown that the more often children eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use illegal drugs.

"Compelling research indicates that children who dine regularly with their families stand a better chance of avoiding risky behaviors," said David B. Dillon, Kroger chairman and c.e.o. "Conversations around the dinner table help parents better understand challenges their children face at specific points in their development.
