Kroger Plans Sixth Unit in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

CINCINNATI -- Kroger Co. here will open a new store in Murfreesboro, Tenn., to capitalize on that market's continuing growth. Site work for the grocery store is slated to begin at the end of 2005, with the store scheduled for completion in 2006 or early 2007.

The chain's latest store in the market will be 66,000 square feet, and will offer gas pumps in the parking lot, according to a report in the Nashville Business Journal. About 100 to 125 employees will work at the store, the report said. Murfreesboro is about 35 miles southeast of Nashville.

The store will anchor a Kroger-owned shopping center, which will sit on 21 acres and will have space available for additional tenants on a few outparcels. "Murfreesboro just continues to grow," Kroger spokeswoman Melissa Eads was quoted in the local business publication as saying. "This is an area we have probably not been able to serve conveniently."

Kroger has seven units in all in Rutherford County, Tenn., and is also planning to expand its presence elsewhere in the state through new store openings and remodel, the journal reported.
