Kroger Names Prestidge Delta Div. Prez, Reaches Pact with N.C. Union

CINCINNATI -- The Kroger Co. here promoted Mark Prestidge to president of its Memphis, Tenn.-based Delta Division, which includes 111 Kroger stores in Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee. Prestidge, who begins his new duties on Oct. 1, was most recently v.p./operations for Kroger's Southwest Division.

Prestidge succeeds Richard Tillman, who recently announced his retirement after a 42-year career with Kroger. (Story continues below.)

Prior to joining Kroger in 2004, Prestidge, 47, spent 22 years with Randall's Food Markets, including serving as s.v.p./operations for Randall's/Safeway Food Markets, where he oversaw daily operations for 122 supermarkets. Prior to that, Prestidge was president of the company's Tom Thumb division.

In other news, Kroger said it forged a tentative agreement with the union representing workers at its 19 North Carolina stores. The Charlotte News & Observer reported that a potential deal had been hammered out with the United Food & Commercial Workers International Union, which represents about half of its 2,000 workers in the state.

The union's contract expired July 20, and negotiations have continued since, with health care benefits being the main sticking point.

Kroger operates more than 2,500 supermarkets and multidepartment stores in 31 states.
