Kroger Helps Employees Go Green with Bags

CINCINNATI -- In a bid to demonstrate its commitment to helping the environment, Kroger Co.'s Indianapolis-based Central Division has purchased reusable shopping bags for the company's 15,000 associates.

The division had launched its reusable bag program in June, which company officials said sold out quickly.

"I felt it was important to make a statement as a company, and I wanted every Kroger associate to serve as an example as we seek ways to protect our environment," said Kroger Central Division president Bob Moeder.

Moeder said the stores are also using energy efficient motors in its refrigeration units, as well as energy efficient light bulbs in its stores. The company is also ramping up its use of green building technology as new stores are built,

With locations primarily in Indiana and Illinois, as well as five stores in Missouri, one in Michigan and one in Ohio, Kroger's Central Division operates 162 food and drug stores and 42 fuel centers under five banners, including Kroger, Scott's, Owen's, Hilander, and Pay Less Super Markets.
