Kroger, Georgia UFCW Local Approve New Pact

CINCINNATI -- Kroger Co. and the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1996 have inked two new 52-month contracts for the chain's operations in Atlanta and Savannah, Ga.

Although the grocery chain, based here, did not disclose financial terms of the new pacts -- which together cover approximately 16,000 Kroger associates at 175 stores primarily in Georgia -- Kroger did say in a statement that the agreements provide for wages and benefits packages that will enable it to "maintain or improve its competitiveness with other retailers in the market."

Kroger also said Monday that members of the UFCW in Roanoke, Va., also approved a new four-year labor agreement covering 3,500 workers.

At the end of the second quarter of fiscal 2005, Kroger operated (either directly or through its subsidiaries) 2,515 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 32 states under two dozen local banners including Kroger, Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Food 4 Less, King Soopers, Smith's and Smith's Marketplace, Fry's and Fry's Marketplace, Dillons, QFC and City Market. Kroger also operated (either directly or through subsidiaries, franchise agreements, or operating agreements) 791 convenience stores, 431 fine jewelry stores, 559 supermarket fuel centers and 42 food processing plants.
