Kroger Central in Partnership with Local Green Group

CINCINNATI -- As part of The Kroger Co.'s Indianapolis-based Central Division's environmental partnership with Fort Wayne's "Grassroots Green" organization, the retailer is selling copies of the "Green Living Guide for Northeast Indiana" in all Northeast Indiana stores, with 100 percent of proceeds going to "Grassroots Green" for their community efforts.

In-store displays will be set up in 21 northeast Indiana Kroger and Scott's stores.
"We hope the sale of the 'Green Living Guide for Northeast Indiana' in our stores is very successful and provides [consumers] with the resources they need to proactively support other community groups in supporting our environment," said John Eliot, Kroger Central Division spokesman. "Protecting that environment matters a great deal to Kroger's associates customers and is appropriately a top priority for us as a company."

Kroger also recently announced the launch of a national plastic recycling program called "Bag 2 Bag" that includes custom-designed barrels in every store allowing customers to contribute plastic grocery bags, dry cleaning plastic and other types of plastic bags for recycling. The barrels also are used for plastic generated by Kroger's store operations, including shrink-wrap.

The news follows earlier announcements that Kroger's Central Division is replacing motors for refrigerators and freezers to significantly reduce energy consumption, as well as adding skylights, light fixtures and different light bulbs in stores to reduce electricity usage.

The Kroger Central Marketing Area has 154 food stores, 129 pharmacies and 49 fuel centers operating under five banners; Kroger, Scott's, Owen's, Hilander and Pay Less with locations primarily in Indiana and Illinois in addition to five stores in Missouri, one in Michigan and one in Ohio.
