Kroger, Central Ohio UFCW Local Reach Tentative Pact
CINCINNATI -- The Kroger Co. here hammered out a second new labor contract this week with the union that represents roughly 10,000 of its workers across Central Ohio.
United Food & Commercial Workers Union Local 1059 members, who are expected to vote on the contract Friday, have been working under an extension to their old contract that expired Nov. 5, and had been threatening to strike. Columbus, Ohio-based Local 1059 represents workers at 82 central Ohio Kroger stores.
Officials from the supermarket chain and Local 1059 have been negotiating since Aug. 31. While no details of the tentative settlement were available, the biggest sticking point during negotiations reportedly concerned to how much Kroger's union workers would contribute to their health insurance.
On Tuesday, Kroger and UFCW Local 1099, based in Dayton, ratified a new 42-month contract labor pact covering 4,200 workers. The agreement covers approximately 4,200 Kroger associates and will expire in June 2009
At the end of the second quarter of fiscal 2005, Kroger operated (either directly or through its subsidiaries) 2,515 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 32 states under two dozen local banners including Kroger, Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Food 4 Less, King Soopers, Smith's and Smith's Marketplace, Fry's and Fry's Marketplace, Dillons, QFC and City Market. Kroger also operated (either directly or through subsidiaries, franchise agreements, or operating agreements) 791 convenience stores, 431 fine jewelry stores, 559 supermarket fuel centers and 42 food processing plants.
