Kroger Central Div. Kicks Off United Way Campaign In Stores

Kroger Central Division is kicking off its United Way campaign with a checkout scan-based promotion that runs through Saturday, Sept. 12. Working in tandem wiith United Way of Central Indiana, the local Kroger subsidiary hopes to provide a way for individuals who do not have a workplace campaign to conveniently support their local United Way or United Fund.

With $1, $2 and $5 tear sheets available for customers to choose from, Kroger’s register receipts will acknowledge customer donations to United Way, thus providing a receipt for tax purposes, according to local press reports.

"Our annual United Way campaign has consistently been one of the largest community engagement priorities for our company,” John Elliott, Kroger Central Division’s public affairs manager was quoted as saying. “Many of the community organizations that we support also receive critical funding as United Way agencies. No other organization has a greater impact on education, workforce and quality of life in every local community Kroger serves than the collective efforts of United Way and their member agencies. By helping United Way, we also help our associates and our customers. It is significant that, with a workforce that is largely hourly associates, we still raised nearly $300,000 for local United Way affiliates serving each local community.”

Elliott said the campaign extends to all 153 stores in five states within the operating division. “Although the campaign is centralized, associate and customer contributions from our local stores are distributed back to each county United Way so that all contributions stay local."

Last year, Kroger Central Division associates and the division operating office donated nearly $300,000 to local United Ways in each county served by their stores in 2008, an increase of 9.06 percent from 2007. This year’s campaign has a goal of increasing donations by 5 percent despite the challenging economy.

Kroger’s Central Division has roughly 150 food stores, 130 pharmacies and 53 fuel centers with locations primarily in Indiana and Illinois.
