Kroger Banner Provided Meals for Over 17,000 Needy Utah Residents

CINCINNATI -- Smith's Food & Drug Stores, a banner of Kroger here, has amassed 35,500 pounds of food in the state of Utah, including 15,648 cans of food and 1,200 turkeys, for the Utah Food Bank, according to published reports. The goods were collected through Smith's "Gift of Giving" program, which ran between Nov. 7 and Dec. 16.

The food bank estimated the food would provide 17,770 meals for needy Utahns.

The Gift of Giving program allows shoppers to buy either a $7 gift bag containing canned food items, including staples such as tuna, rice, beans, and peanut butter, or a $10 turkey. Smith's delivered the collected items to the food bank, which aimed to raise 2 million pounds of food through its own holiday food drive.

Smith's, based in Salt Lake City, has about 130 stores in Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming.
