Kraft Recalls Baker's Premium White Chocolate Baking Squares on Salmonella Risk

NORTHFIELD, Ill --Kraft Foods here said last night it had issued a recall in the U.S. for Baker's Premium White Chocolate Baking Squares product might be contaminated with Salmonella.

Kraft said it had distributed the baking squares nationwide. The recall involves 6-oz. Packages with a UPC Code of 0043000252200 and four best when used by dates: 31 MAR 2008 XCZ; 01 APR 2008 XCZ; 02 APR 2008 XCZ; and 03 APR 2008 XCZ.

Testing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that detected the presence of Salmonella in some packages of the baking squares. Kraft said it is aggressively investigating the source of the problem.

Some 24,000 cases of the product involved in the recall were produced, a Kraft spokeswoman told Reuters. So far the company has received no reports of illness related to the product, she said.

Kraft Foods is one of the world's largest food and beverage manufacturers, with annual revenues of more than $34 billion.
