King Kullen Hires Director of Real Estate

King Kullen Grocery Co., Inc. has hired James Ashley “A.J.” Johnston to be its director of real estate. “James Johnston brings to King Kullen extensive experience gained in diverse roles managing and directing all aspects of real estate acquisitions, entitlements and development in the New York tri-state area with both Fortune 500 companies and private ventures,” noted the company’s co-president, Brian C. Cullen, adding that Johnston “will play a vital role in overseeing our real estate department and identifying new sites for possible acquisition or lease by King Kullen.”

At King Kullen, Johnston oversees research and strategic real estate planning, underwriting, and due diligence efforts, with primary responsibility for the asset management of King Kullen’s stores. His responsibilities include the disposition of real estate, financing, leasing, construction and maintenance.

Before joining King Kullen, Johnston was development associate for Blumenfeld Development Group, Ltd., where he handled sourcing, underwriting and due diligence efforts for acquisitions and financing, in addition to planning, development, construction, and leasing.

Founded in 1930 by Michael J. Cullen, Bethpage, N.Y.-based King Kullen employs over 4,800 people and operates 52 stores throughout New York’s Long Island and Staten Island.
