Jungle Jim's Launches Plan to Label 120K Items with UPCs

FAIRFIELD, Ohio -- Jungle Jim's here, has tapped Paxar Corp., a global provider of bar code, RFID and identification technologies, to help it label its diverse offering of more than 120,000 products.

Jungle Jim's 300,000-square-foot food and culinary complex carries more than 44,000 imported items from 75 countries, which often arrive at its facility without price or UPC (Universal Product Code) bar code labels attached.

The labeling of Jungle Jim's estimated $7 million in inventory is a massive undertaking, even with an employee base of over 300 people, making efficiency and accuracy a must.

As opposed to slowing productivity by walking to a stationary printer and back, Jungle Jim's employees will now carry Paxar's unique Monarch Pathfinder Ultra Platinum hand-held printer right to the product and tap the touch screen to retrieve the application and print UPC bar code labels. The label is immediately printed and applied directly to the item, all within seconds and with one hand.

"I learned how to use it in about 15 minutes," said Jungle Jim's scanning coordinator, Denise Burkhart.

The Windows CE technology simplifies programming for Jungle Jim's IT staff and is compatible with many network operating systems.

Paxar said its Ultra Platinum capabilities can "single handedly improve productivity" not only on retail floors, but also in distribution centers, receiving docks, manufacturing facilities and warehouses.
