Jewel, Sunrise Growers Pick In-Store Promo Winner
PLACENTIA, Calif. -- Sunrise Growers and Jewel Food Stores awarded the Sparrow family of Manteno, Ill., a strawberry-red 2005 Volkswagen Beetle for a photomontage and essay entry in the national "Give Strawberries a Spin" in-store contest.
The Sparrow family's winning entry depicted the many ways they enjoy fresh strawberries. On accepting her new car, Shelly Sparrow was incredulous. "I can't believe it! We've never won anything, and now we won a brand new VW Beetle just for doing what we love -- eating Sunrise Growers strawberries. We're absolutely thrilled that Jewel sponsored this contest!"
Sparrow said she peppers everything from spinach salads to fondue with strawberries, noting that her four daughters "just think they taste good." As a mom, Sparrow said she most appreciates "how I increase the nutritional value of the foods they eat."
Sunrise Growers and Jewel presented the Sparrows with their brand new car at the Bourbonnais, Ill., Jewel-Osco, where the family first learned of the contest through interactive displays featuring strawberry usage guides, recipe booklets and tear pad entry forms.
According to Jim Gardeck, produce sales manager of Jewel-Osco, a division of Albertsons, in-store consumer promotions like the "Give Strawberries a Spin" give their company an edge.
