Jewel-Osco Taps Talents of Local Culinarian for Latino Food Demos

In a bid to help Latino families simplify preparation of traditional seasonal favorites, Supevalu’s Chicago-based Jewel-Osco subsidiary is teaming up with locally renowned chef Rafael Perez, head of the Culinary Program at St. Augustine College, to conduct cooking demonstrations consisting of traditional Latin American holiday recipes, while providing tips on how to prepare better-for-you versions of dishes such as tamales, pozole, arroz con gandules or tembleque without sacrificing flavor.

The events showcasing the flavors of Latin American cuisine will take place this weekend alongside giveaways of 200 free gift bags each day with a proof of purchase. Santa Claus will also be part of the celebration, distributing gift bags and posing for photos with kids and families.

Jewel-Osco, which operates 183 stores in Illinois, Iowa and Indiana, has also been spearheading various initiatives throughout the holiday season to generate awareness of hunger relief, and to lessen the burden on neighborhood food pantries and community based organizations that have seen competition for funds escalate due to the economic crisis.
