Irradiated Burgers Hit Foodservice Market
RICHMOND, Va. - Performance Food Group announced it will partner with irradiation pioneer SureBeam to be the first major foodservice distributor to market a brand of irradiated ground beef products to foodservice operators.
Hamburger ground in slaughterhouse facilities is the chief carrier of E.coli 0157:H7 to consumers, who can become seriously ill or die if they ingest the living pathogen. Irradiation kills bacteria, including listeria and salmonella, through electronic irradiation, a process that uses ordinary electricity. The process has been known to alter the taste of the product, and the process is vilified by many consumer groups.
Performance Food Group will launch a line of ten products in the East Coast, Southwest, and Midwest markets. They will include 100% pure ground beef patties, 100% USDA Black Angus ground beef patties, and 100% pure bulk ground beef. The new products will be sold under the West Creek brand.
