Hy-Vee's Chinese Hailed for Excellence

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- Hy-Vee's Chinese Express, the company's most popular dining service, has been named one of the Top 10 Chinese foodservice chains in the U.S. It is the third year in a row Hy-Vee, based here, has been so honored.

Chinese Restaurant News recognized Hy Vee on its annual list. In addition to excellence in food and flavor, the chains' listing is determined by sales volume, store units, public votes and service factors such as efficiency, friendliness, customer satisfaction and consistency. The awards were presented during the All Asia Food Expo in Los Angeles recently.

The grocer keeps expanding the program, meanwhile. By the end of 2006 there will be fresh Chinese food in 120 of the Hy-Vee's 198 supermarkets, up from 100 just a year ago. At the restaurants, customers can eat in, take out, or purchase pre-packaged meals from a food case.

It is no wonder Chinese is the company's fastest growing food service, said Greg Frampton, assistant v.p. of foodservice for Hy-Vee. "We employ over 350 trained Chinese chefs who cook from scratch."

The best sellers are Sesame Chicken, General Chicken and fresh Crab Rangoon. The newest entree is Beijing Grilled Chicken, a healthy alternative to the fried dishes. All the dishes are prepared without MSG, said Frampton.

Hy-Vee, Inc. is an employee-owned corporation operating 224 retail stores in seven Midwestern states. For 2005, the company recorded total sales of $4.9 billion, ranking it among the top 20 supermarket chains and the top 35 private companies in the U.S.
