Hy-Vee, Sunkist 'Take a Stand' for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- Hy-Vee Inc. here is supporting Sunkist Growers’ award-winning "Take a Stand" national cause-marketing campaign that empowers kids to give back to their local community by selling old-fashioned, freshly-squeezed lemonade.

This weekend, children of Hy-Vee employees and customers will work together to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation by setting up Sunkist signature lemonade stands in front of all 224 stores. All proceeds raised from the lemonade sales will go directly to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the leading charitable fundraiser and advocate of juvenile (type 1) diabetes research worldwide.

While some stores may extend their stands’ hours of operation throughout the weekend, all will be open for business from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday July 27 and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday July 28.

"The Hy-Vee family is committed to helping children with diabetes and their families maximize their quality of life," said Bonnie Bell, Hy-Vee a.v.p. and chair of the company's JDRF fundraising campaign.

This summer, Sunkist is giving away 15,000 lemonade stands, lemonade recipes, and tool kits to kids who pledge to use the materials to raise money for the charity of their choosing. More than 12,500 requests have poured in from kids throughout the United States and Canada to date.

Since the program's inception four years ago, Sunkist has sent out more than 23,500 free lemonade stands, recipe cards and juicer kits to help kids get started. Since its inception, it is estimated that more than $1.5 million has been raised for charity by kids, one glass of Sunkist lemonade at a time.

The employee-owned Hy-Vee operates 224 retail stores in seven Midwestern states. For 2006 the company recorded total sales of $5.3 billion, ranking it among the top 20 supermarket chains and the top 40 private companies in the U.S.
