Hannaford Supermarkets Latest to Promote Family Day

SCARBOROUGH, Maine -- Hannaford Supermarkets is the latest grocer to join in a growing effort to encourage families to eat together as a way to discourage drug abuse.

The chain is working with the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University to promote the sixth annual Family Day--A Day to Eat Dinner with your Children, to held Sept. 25.

Stop & Shop/Giant-Landover and Winn-Dixie are among the supermarket operators that have already announced their planned participation in the event. Launched by CASA in 2001, Family Day now is a national drive to promote parental involvement as a way to lower abuse among children and teenagers and raise healthier kids.

"Hannaford is committed to improving the health and well-being of our associates, customers, and communities," said Hannaford president and c.e.o. Ron Hodge in a statement. "This partnership promotes the concept of families dining together as a means of establishing healthy lifestyles for young people. Hannaford encourages our associates and customers to celebrate Family Day by eating together on Sept. 25 and as frequently as possible."

Delhaize-owned Hannaford operates 158 stores under the Hannaford Supermarket and Hannaford Supermarket and Pharmacy banners. Hannaford employs more than 26,000 associates.
