Hannaford Launches Annual Anti-hunger Campaign

SCARBOROUGH, Maine -- Hannaford Bros. Co. here kicked off its fifth annual "Have a Heart for Hunger" initiative, which helps provides hunger relief to food banks in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts, on Sunday, Feb. 3. To date, the campaign has raised over $325,000 for America's Second Harvest agencies. Have a Heart for Hunger runs until March 1.

The program enables customers can make their donations part of their food bill. Stores have donation coupons available at the registers, in $2 and $5 denominations. All funds raised will be donated to local food banks, and dispersed based on store location and food bank service areas.

According to Hannaford, a $2 donation allows a food bank to buy about $20 worth of food or provide five meals to a needy person, and a $5 donation allows a food bank to buy about 42 boxes of macaroni an cheese.

"This year, high energy costs will send more people to emergency food assistance agencies throughout the region," noted Hannaford director of external communications Caren Epstein. "Through Have a Heart for Hunger, Hannaford associates and customers will have an opportunity to help agencies meet those increasing demands."

The grocer donates over 8 million pounds of food to local agencies annually, Epstein said.

Delhaize-owned Hannaford operates 165 stores under the Hannaford Supermarket and Hannaford Supermarket and Pharmacy banners.
