Hannaford Buys Hometown Property

SCARBOROUGH, Maine -- Hannaford Supermarkets has bought the Orion Center, a retail property located off Route 1 in the grocer's hometown here. The two-building, 15-acre property, which Hannaford purchased Dec. 27 from Dead River Properties, has sat vacant for over two years.

Town officials expressed the hope that the grocer would develop the property. An earlier proposal by Dead River Properties called for the creation of a retail center featuring banks, restaurants, and pedestrian walkways, according to a local press report.

However, Hannaford has not yet decided what use the property will serve. Spokeswoman Caren Epstein confirmed to Progressive Grocer that the company "is still formulating plans for development."
