Grocers, Wal-Mart Help Subway Hit 6K 'Nontraditional' Units
MILFORD, Conn. - It's been a busy summer for Subway. The international sandwich chain based here said last week that during the months of June and July it opened 340 new restaurants in 35 countries around the world, among them 208 locations in 39 U.S. states and seven Canadian provinces.
Of those new franchises, one opened in a conventional supermarket, Ray's Sure Save Grocery Store in Waymart, Pa.; 37 opened within convenience stores; and 64 inside Wal-Mart stores.
According to the company, subway franchisees were instrumental in achieving the development milestone of 6,000 international locations. Stateside, the goal of 400 stores in Alabama was also met during the summer.
With minimal equipment needs and flexible space requirements, the Subway additionally attained the milestone of 6,000 nontraditional locations, in such places as grocery stores, airports, amusement parks, and hospitals. During June and July, the company opened outlets in the National University of Singapore, a German car dealership, a South Korean department store, and a New York museum.
Subway has more than 26,400 locations in 85 countries, making it the largest submarine sandwich franchise in the world. The company has more locations open and operating in North America than any chain.
