Green Giant-Landover Prototype to Open This Week

Landover, Md. -- Giant Food, LLC here said it will open its latest prototype Super Giant store in southeast Washington, D.C. this coming Friday. The 63,000-square-foot store, which the chain called a departure from the conventional Giant store layout, will feature expanded food and pharmacy departments, new decor and signage, all in an energy-efficient package.

"This new prototype store…will offer our shoppers an exceptional selection of prepared foods, quality perishable and nonperishable products, and a friendly staff dedicated to a high level of customer service," noted Jim Astuto, Giant's Executive v.p. of operations, in a statement.

The store is part of a revitalization project in the location where the National Guard facility known as Camp Simms used to be. The Camp Simms Giant will be the first District supermarket to open east of the Anacostia River since 1997, according to the retailer.

Environmentally friendly features include high-efficiency cooling and heating systems; a white membrane roof that reflects, rather than absorbs solar energy; and infrared actuated faucets and toilet flush valves that conserve water usage. Centrally located microcomputers will monitor all systems to help lower the total amount of energy needed to run the location.

Giant said among the store's service departments will be a produce department showcasing overflowing baskets of produce under colorful canopies, creating a farmstand atmosphere; a new cheese shop with over 200 varieties of imported and domestic cheeses, and an assortment of prepared foods shoppers.

The store also boasts an extensive natural food selection; a Best Sellers department with the latest books, films, magazines, and video games; a toy and party goods department, a home goods section; a Staples home and office supply store-within-a-store; and a new value aisle featuring advertised sale items, the chain said.

Additional amenities include Western Union money orders and wire transfers, Rug Doctor rentals, an ATM, Giant Gift Cards, phone cards, and postage stamps.

Ahold-owned Giant Food LLC, operates 185 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, and employs about 21,000 associates. Included within the 185 stores are 166 full-service pharmacies.
