Green Giant-Landover Prototype Bows Today

LANDOVER, Md. -- Giant Food, LLC here is opening its latest prototype today, a 56,657-square-foot, full-service, food-and-pharmacy combination "Super Giant" that the grocer characterized as a "departure from conventional Giant stores" in terms of state-of-the-art energy efficiency, among other amenities.

The prototype store features such energy-efficient concepts as a lighting system using "daylight collectors" to illuminate the sales floor area, and computer sensors throughout the store that will automatically dim the lighting based on the amount of daylight detected by the sensors.

Also included in the design are high-efficiency cooling and heating systems; a white-membrane roof that reflects, rather than absorbs, solar energy; and infrared actuated faucets and toilet flush valves to conserve water usage. All of these features will be monitored by centrally located microcomputers to help reduce the amount of energy needed to run the new store, Giant Food said.

The store, in the Frederick County, Md. village of Urbana, also sports a totally new interior decor, including new store signage, and larger food and pharmacy departments, said the chain.

Among the new store’s departments are extensive ethnic food, produce, service deli, in-store bakery, floral, seafood, and meat sections; a large selection of natural foods; a Best Sellers department offering the latest books, movies, magazines, and video games; a home goods section, a Staples brand home and office supply section; and a new value aisle selling advertised sale items. The new Giant store is also completely accessible to disabled shoppers, Giant said.

Additional services and conveniences at the location include Western Union money orders and wire transfers, Rug Doctor equipment rentals, an ATM, Giant Gift Cards, phone cards, and postage stamps.

Ahold-owned Giant Food operates 189 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, and employs more than 25,000 associates. Included within the 189 stores are 165 full-service pharmacies.
