Goya Aids Catholic Charities in ‘Feeding Our Neighbors’
More than 20 Goya Foods employees volunteered on Jan. 19 to aid the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York's Feeding Our Neighbors campaign, as well as honor Martin Luther King Jr., at the Joseph P. Kennedy Center, in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City.
In accordance with #GoyaGives, a company initiative that encourages others to help the needy, Goya employees unloaded 35,000 pounds of food from a company truck, and then packed, restocked inventory and prepared bags for distribution to a large network of food pantries and emergency food programs throughout the archdiocese.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Interfaith Day of Service was part of Secaucus, N.J.-based Goya's overall support of Catholic Charities through a 300,000-pound food donation that will help feed hungry people in the area, including a significant population of unaccompanied minors from Latin America.
The Harlem event was one element of a six-site simultaneous volunteer effort at food pantries throughout the archdiocese. As well as in Harlem, volunteers helped at organizations in Washington Heights, the South Bronx, Staten Island, Brooklyn and Kingston, N.Y.
Together, Catholic Charities and Goya aim to maximize impact by collecting and distributing 1 million meals to feed hungry New York residents.
