GoMeals iPhone App Helps People with Diabetes Eat Healthy Anywhere

Sanofi-aventis U.S. yesterday launched GoMeals, a new iPhone application, or app, designed to help people living with diabetes make healthy food choices.

The App, now available for download at the iTunes App store, is a food-tracking tool that allows users to search thousands of foods and dishes from popular restaurants and grocery stores to determine the nutritional content of meals and snacks.

“The GoMeals app was created by and for people with diabetes in consultation with leading diabetes and nutrition experts,” said Jerry Durso, VP, specialized therapeutics business unit at Bridgewater, N.J.-based sanofi-aventis U.S.

Although it’s primarily designed for people with diabetes, GoMeals can also be used by anyone interested in tracking the nutritional content of their meals. The app’s “Today’s Plate” feature helps monitor each day’s calorie intake, as well as the distribution of carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

These three nutrient categories are also represented in a pie chart on the touchscreen. Foods can be selected from the CalorieKing nutritional database, which contains more than 25,000 common food items and over 200 restaurant menus. A restaurant locator feature helps users locate eateries based on current location and the type of cuisine preferred. The GoMeals app enables users preparing meals at home to add individual ingredients to the plate and thereby keep track of the nutritional content of any meal.

Sanofi-aventis U.S. has also launched a Twitter presence at http://twitter.com/GoMeals to encourage conversation among users of the app, and since February has offered a “GoInsulin” YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/goinsulin) that provides information and success stories about insulin therapy.
