GMA Names S.V.P. and Chief Science and Regulatory Affairs Officer

WASHINGTON -- The Grocery Manufacturers Association here has appointed Robert E. Brackett, Ph.D., s.v.p. and Chief Science and Regulatory Affairs Officer.

Brackett succeeds Pat Verduin, who has left GMA to pursue other interests.

"His demonstrated leadership, deep experience in the food safety arena, and his academic background will help GMA and its member companies continue to deliver on their promise to provide consumers with safe, abundant, and affordable food," noted GMA president and c.e.o. Cal Dooley in a statement.

Brackett most recently served as director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), a position he has held since 2004. Prior to becoming CFSAN director, he served as the director of food safety and security, and as senior microbiologist at the center.

Before joining the FDA, Brackett was a professor at the University of Georgia's Center for Food Safety, and an assistant professor at North Carolina State University's Extension Foods and Nutrition division.

Reporting directly to Dooley, Brackett will oversee all of the association's scientific and regulatory activity, including the operation of its in-house food safety laboratory.

GMA represents the world's leading food, beverage and consumer products companies. Its board of directors is comprised of chief executive officers from the association's member companies.
