GMA Appoints First V.P. of Political Affairs

WASHINGTON - the Grocery Manufacturers Association here has named Michael J. McShane to the newly created position of v.p. of political affairs, in a bid to strengthen GMA's political and grass-roots infrastructure.

"[McShane] brings to this position tremendous experience in the political arena, having worked in the White House, on Capitol Hill, and for Fortune 500 corporations on a broad range of political action, grass-roots, and legislative issues," said the trade group's for here, GMA president and c.e.o. Cal Dooley said yesterday.

In his new role McShane will report to s.v.p. and chief government affairs officer Mary Sophos. His responsibilities will include bolstering GMA's political action committee activity, fundraising and grass-roots mobilization efforts.

McShane most recently served as v.p., government relations for SmithBucklin, an association management company. Before that, he founded and was president of the McShane Group, a government relations firm with clients in energy, health care, and Internet technology; and served for 10 years as director of government relations for fortune 100 company TRW.
