Giant/Martin's Food Stores Holding 2nd Kids' Recipe Contest

CARLISLE, Pa. -- Giant Food Stores, LLC and Martin's Food Stores here are inviting chefs aged 7 to 14 to enter the second Kitch'N Kids recipe contest, which encourages youngsters to whip up a nutritious breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snack including at least one serving of milk, cheese, or yogurt from Dannon, Cabot, Lehigh Valley, or Giant. The grand prize is a $10,000 savings bond.

The creators of the top five recipes will vie for the grand prize at an April 26 "cook-off." Four first-prize winners will each get a $1,000 savings bond, and 100 second-prize winners will win a Kitch'N Kids apron.

"Kitch'N Kids gives children the chance to experiment with healthy foods, especially bone-building dairy products," noted Giant and Martin's new corporate nutritionist, Sylvia Emberger, in a statement. "By learning how to prepare healthy meals and snacks at a young age, kids will be better prepared to eat healthfully as adults."

The object of the contest is to get parents and children to spend time together making healthy family meals. Studies indicate that when kids help select and prepare foods, they're more likely to try new foods. Currently, most children and adolescents don't consume the recommended three to four servings of dairy a day.

Owned by Ahold USA, Giant operates stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia under the Giant Food Stores, Martin's Food Markets, and Foodsource banners.
