Giant to Place Self-service Seafood, Floral Sections in Over a Quarter of Stores: Report

LANDOVER, Md. -- Giant Food, LLC here is in the midst of converting seafood and floral departments in over a quarter of its 190 stores to self-service, according to a published report.

Giant Food spokesman Barry Scher told the Washington Times that the Ahold banner began last month to change over about 55 seafood and 62 floral departments in "low-volume stores."

Scher added that the retailer was working with the United Food and Commercial Workers to find new positions for the associates who will be displaced by the conversions, although he didn't say how many workers would be affected.

"The food industry has changed, and many of our competitors have moved from this particular model," Scher noted by way of explanation, adding that shoppers will see more consistent goods, since they'll be delivered to the stores daily.

Progressive Grocer reported yesterday that fellow Ahold banner Stop & Shop also plans self-service conversions of some of its seafood departments this year.
