Giant-Landover Teams Up With Baltimore Ravens, Extends ‘Ultimate Crab Challenge’ Deadline
Maryland’s Giant Food, LLC and the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens have joined forces to benefit the Maryland Food Bank during the 2010 season, with Giant Food designated as the team’s official supermarket partner.
The two organizations have kicked off a season-long giving campaign benefiting the food bank. Ravens president Dick Cass and Giant Food regional VP Rob Harman have unveiled a new tailgating logo, which displays each organization’s primary marks with a tailgate grilling theme.
“Who better than Giant to bring together great food and fun for all football fans to enjoy?” said Robin Michel, Giant Food president. “Through our partnership with the Baltimore Ravens, we will continue to focus efforts on the communities we serve and help combat hunger.”
Giant Food will be the Ravens Tailgating Headquarters, offering shoppers the opportunity to win unique Ravens prizes and experiences when picking up key consumer products. The partnership will be promoted via multiple media channels, including radio, television and Internet, as well as other advertising and event assets, including Ravens Walk.
The grocer will support the team’s annual Ravens Family Food Drive at Baltimore-area stores in November. Through their partnership, Giant Food and the Ravens expect to donate more than 40,000 pounds of nonperishable food items to the Maryland Food Bank.
“The Maryland Food Bank has a nearly 60-year combined partnership with Giant Food and the Baltimore Ravens,” said Maryland Food Bank CEO Deborah Flateman. “Together, we will strengthen our efforts and broaden our reach to ensure that no Maryland man, woman, child or senior citizen has to wonder where they will get their next meal.”
Giant Food and the Ravens will also team up to support community events, including breast cancer awareness and prevention efforts, in the month of October.
In other Giant Food news, the deadline to submit original crab recipes for the “Ultimate Crab Challenge” promotion offered by Giant Food, LLC and Phillips Seafood has been extended to 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 23. Entries can be submitted online at www.UltimateCrabChallenge.com.
The first annual contest, which originally rolled out July 15, offers a $1,000 prize for the winning recipe, as well as the opportunity to have the dish featured on the menu of the Phillips Harborplace eatery in Baltimore, while the second- and third-place winners will each receive $100 gift cards to Giant Food and Phillips Seafood Restaurants.
The submitted hot or cold recipes must feature at least 1 pound of crab meat as the primary ingredient. A panel of Giant and Phillips Seafood chefs will act as preliminary judges, with recipes judged on taste, ease of preparation, creativity, and clarity of cooking instructions. The top three finalists will take part in a 30-minute cook-off on Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Maryland Seafood Festival at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis.
