Giant-Landover Talks Store Expansions, Remodels in Works for 2006
LANDOVER, Md. -- Giant Food here on Friday unveiled its store expansion and remodeling plan for the rest of 2006, consisting of eight new and replacement stores to open, as well as six major models, and called the strategy "the initial phase of a multiyear effort to reposition Giant through new capital investments throughout its market area."
The goal is improved shopping experience, the company said. "We are making a significant investment to improve our customer offering and make our stores easier to shop in," noted Giant Food e.v.p. and general manager Bill Holmes. "Our new prototype stores offer expanded perishable departments and focus on making shopping more convenient through technological improvements and a wider assortment of ready-to-eat and prepared foods."
Earlier in the year, Giant opened an expanded and remodeled Van Ness store in the District of Columbia, and opened its first new prototype store, in Millville, Del. "Both our new Van Ness and Millville stores have been very enthusiastically received by our customers," said Holmes.
The chain will its first new Super Giant prototype store in the Baltimore-Washington metro area in Dunkirk, Md. on Aug. 25.
By the end of 2006, Giant will have opened new stores in Bowie, Chevy Chase, and Urbana, Md., and Haymarket and Ryan Park, Va.; and have renovated stores in Bear, Delaware, Easton and Elkridge, Md., and Alexandria, Gainesville, and Woodbridge, Va.
Giant's overall store for 2006 program also involves closing some locations. "These are smaller, outdated stores for which new investment was not a practical alternative," noted Holmes. "We believe other existing or new Giant stores will effectively service our customers currently shopping at these stores. Also, the Giant store associates affected by these store closings will have an opportunity to work in other Giant stores."
The seven units to be closed before the end of the year are the Someplace Special store in McLean, Va.; the Giant Drug store in Salisbury, Md.; and Giant supermarkets in Bowie (Laurel-Bowie Road), Edgewood, Salisbury (North Salisbury Blvd.), and Wilde Lake-Columbia, Md.; and Annandale, Va.
