Giant-Landover to Debut Prototype in Falls Church, Va. this Week

Giant Food, LLC will open its newest prototype store, a full-service food and pharmacy combo called "Super Giant," tomorrow in Falls Church, Va. As well as offering customers a wide assortment of products and services, the 57,861-square-foot store is Giant's latest layout, including new decor, new store signage, and bigger food and pharmacy departments, in a state-of-the-art, energy-efficient building.

Among the store's highlights are a fresh produce department with overflowing baskets displayed under colorful canopies, creating a farm stand atmosphere; a Starbucks shop where customers can buy freshly brewed coffees and pastries; a cheese shop offering over 200 varieties of imported and domestic cheeses; a quality selection of prepared foods for time-strapped customers; a large selection of natural foods; a Best Sellers department featuring the latest in books, movies, magazines and video games; a toy and party goods section; a home goods section; a Staples brand home and office supply section; and a new value aisle featuring advertised sale items.

Environmentally friendly features include high-efficiency cooling and heating systems; a white membrane roof that reflects, rather than absorbs solar energy; and infrared actuated faucets and toilet flush valves that conserve water usage. All of these features will be monitored by centrally located microcomputers to help lower the amount of energy needed to operate the store.

"Our shoppers will experience an exceptional selection of prepared foods, quality perishable and nonperishable products, and a friendly staff dedicated to a high level of customer service," noted Jim Nazzaro, s.v.p. of sales at the Landover, Md.-based Ahold USA banner, in a statement.

The new Falls Church Super Giant will offer such additional services and conveniences as Western Union money orders and wire transfers, Rug Doctor rentals, ATM, Giant Gift Cards, phone cards, and postage stamps.

Giant operates 184 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, and employs about 21,000 associates.
