Giant-Landover D.C.-area Prototype Store Opens Today

LANDOVER, Md. -- Giant Food here reveals its first new prototype store in the Washington, D.C. metro area today: a full-service food-and-pharmacy combination store at 10790 Town Center Boulevard in Dunkirk, Md. Offering a wide assortment of products and services, the 69,810-square-foot "Super Giant" employs about 150 associates.

Grand opening activities are scheduled to take place all day, with special entertainment, food sampling, random prize drawings, and face-painting activities for children all on tap. Proceeds from a three-day hot dog and soda sidewalk sale will go to Meals on Wheels of Calvert County.

Noted Giant Food e.v.p. and general manager Bill Holmes in a statement: "The Dunkirk Super Giant will offer our shoppers an exceptional selection of prepared foods, quality perishable and nonperishable products, and a friendly staff dedicated to a high level of customer service."

Among the prototype's offerings are a produce department with a farm stand feel, a Starbucks shop where freshly brewed coffees and pastries are on sale, a new cheese shop with over 70 varieties of imported and domestic specialty cheeses, a sushi bar where a chef prepares foods on site, and prepared foods including a variety of Boston Market entrees and side dishes for customers.

The store additionally employs such energy-saving concepts a state-of-the-art lighting system that uses "daylight collectors" to illuminate the sales floor area; computer sensors throughout the store to automatically dim the lighting based on the amount of daylight detected; high-efficiency cooling and heating systems; a white membrane roof that reflects, rather than absorbs, solar energy; and infrared actuated faucets and toilet flush valves to conserve water usage. All of these features are monitored by centrally located microcomputers to help reduce the amount of energy needed to run the new store.

Also included in the store are an extensive selection of natural foods; an ethnic food section carrying Hispanic and Asian items; an in-store bakery with over 15 varieties of artisan breads, in addition to rolls, cakes, and other baked goods made on site, and Giant Food’s new Nature’s Promise breads; a meat department offering USDA Choice beef, Grade A poultry, marinated meats, and prepared dishes; a Best Sellers department featuring books, movies, magazines and video games; a toy and party goods section; a home goods section, a Staples brand home and office supply section; and a value aisle offering advertised sale items.

Services and conveniences at the new store abound. Some of them are Western Union money orders and wire transfers, Rug Doctor rentals, an ATM, Giant Gift Cards, phone cards, and postage stamps. The location is also fully accessible to disabled customers.

The store will be open daily from 5 a.m. to midnight, with pharmacy hours Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday/holidays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Giant Food operates 193 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, and employs over 25,000 associates. Included within the 193 stores are 164 full-service pharmacies.
