Giant Food Announces Site for New Fresh Food DC

LANDOVER, Md. - Giant Food, owned by Royal Ahold, has announced it will open a new fresh food distribution center in Howard County, Maryland that should be in operation by the mid-summer of 2003. Giant expects to hold formal groundbreaking ceremonies this summer.

Giant's current perishables distribution center, which opened in 1957, is located in Landover, Md., adjacent to the company's corporate headquarters and employs 550 associates. Giant said it expects all of the center's regular workforce will be offered job opportunities when the new distribution facility opens next year. Giant will maintain their Landover administrative headquarters in Prince George's County, Md.

The new fresh food distribution center will be designed to serve all of Giant's current 187 stores and provide for the company's continued growth. The new fresh food facility will distribute produce, meat, deli, and seafood.

"There were several factors that were considered in arriving at this decision," said Dan Currie, executive vice president of operations for Giant. "Logistics, cost of doing business, employee retention and incentives were among the many issues that were considered. Giant is confident in our decision and applaud the Maryland State and County economic development leaders for playing an important role in this process."

Giant currently operates a dry grocery and frozen food distribution facility in Howard County in Jessup, Md., which opened in 1979.
