Giant Eagle Stores to Remain Open for Easter

PITTSBURGH -- Although it has done so before in other markets, Giant Eagle will now keep its company-owned Pittsburgh-area stores open on Easter Sunday for the first time. In fact, this coming Easter will see Giant Eagle stores open for business chainwide, according to the company.

Although Giant Eagle spokesman Brian Frey conceded to Progressive Grocer that the chain certainly has seen increased competition from such players as convenience stores, discount stores, and supercenters, the move was "definitely more of a customer service decision." Frey added that the company wished to "provide a solution" for shoppers who need to make last-minute purchases and pick up forgotten items as they get ready to prepare their holiday meals.

All Giant Eagle stores will be open until 4 p.m. Easter Sunday, which falls this year on March 27.

The retailer has 221 locations, consisting of 140 corporate and 81 independently owned and operated stores, throughout Western Pennsylvania (100), Northeast and Eastern Ohio (114), Northern West Virginia (four), and Western Maryland (three).
