Giant Eagle To Shutter Hagerstown, Md. Unit
HAGERSTOWN, Md. -- Giant Eagle said it will close a store here on Sept. 24, due to poor sales.
"The decision to close one of our supermarkets is always difficult," said Rob Borella, a spokesman for the Pittsburgh-based chain. "Despite ongoing promotional efforts focused on providing customers great values, our Hagerstown supermarket was not generating the sales volume necessary to operate profitably."
Prior to closing its doors, the chain will trim the store's hours of operation to 7 am to 6 p.m. daily, effective September 4th. Affected customers were directed to visit two other stores in the area.
Giant Eagle notified employees of the store's closing this week. It said it will "review possible opportunities to provide the approximately 60 employees with alternative employment at other area locations."
Giant Eagle acquired the store, originally an independently owned, Supervalu-supplied County Market, in 2001. Store manager Jackie Parker will oversee all aspects of the closing at store level.
