Giant Eagle Resumes Double Coupons In Ohio
PITTSBURGH -- After reversing its decision to discontinue doubling coupons that exceed 50 cents in its core Pittsburgh market, Giant Eagle based here has followed suit in the Akron, Cleveland and Canton, Ohio markets by reinstating double coupons.
On Sept. 6, the grocery chain said it would stop accepting double coupons immediately in the Cleveland and Akron areas, in view of its assessment that customers use fewer manufacturers’ coupons in favor of other discount and loyalty programs instead.
Giant Eagle chairman and c.e.o. David Shapira was later quoted in press reports saying about the reversal that the chain “misjudged the impact of the changes we were considering.”
The 1,900-member Northeast Ohio Couponing Group, meanwhile, cheered the news, and claimed victory for spurring Giant Eagle to change its mind. Debbie Young, co-founder of the organization, was quoted as saying that members of her group phoned and wrote letters to Giant Eagle executives complaining about the company’s decision to end double coupons.
Members of the group had already started boycotting Giant Eagle and shopping at other stores, said Young, who noted that her organization’s members would now resume patronizing Giant Eagle.
The double coupons, redeemable on coupons up to 99 cents, were reinstated by Giant Eagle on Friday. The practice was to have ended on Sept. 30 in the Akron and Cleveland markets.
