Giant Eagle, Others Grocers Recognized for Earth-friendly Efforts

PITTSBURGH -- Giant Eagle, Inc. here is among the winners of the 2004 "America's Marketplace Recycles!" Awards program, presented by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in recognition of outstanding efforts and achievements by ICSC members to conserve resources, recycle, and purchase recycled content products at shopping centers across the country.

Giant Eagle was named Outstanding Retailer (Regional or Local) by the ICSC and EPA. Other retail winners include: Recycler of the Year -- Target Corp., Minneapolis; Best Expansion of an Existing Recycling Program -- Albertsons, Boise, Idaho; Outstanding
Retailer (National) -- Office Depot, Delray Beach, Fla.

"Giant Eagle is quite honored to receive this distinguished award, which is a testament to
our ongoing dedication to operating in an environmentally-friendly manner," said Giant Eagle's director of conservation, Jim Lampl, in a statement. "For more than 74 years, we have strived to operate as a true corporate partner in the communities in which we live and serve, and we are committed to expanding conservation-oriented practices to our retail and corporate locations."

The "America's Marketplace Recycles!" Awards program was designed to increase public awareness of the benefits of recycling.
