Giant Eagle Opens Latest Prototype Incarnation

PITTSBURGH -- The latest edition in the evolution of Giant Eagle's signature supermarket concept will debut this week, with the unveiling the local market leader's first ground-up location in the thriving northern suburbs here.

Located in the borough of Seven Fields, the 24-hour, 86,000 square-foot supermarket will showcase a variety of the region's highest-quality food at competitive prices, as well as a GetGo fuel station and convenience store, company officials said. It will officially open June 23.

The new concept store will include "a variety of convenience-oriented service departments, warm and inviting colors and décor, and an outstanding food offering," said Kevin Srigley, Giant Eagle's v.p. of marketing. Departments include an international aisle; prepared foods with fresh sushi and an in-store café; an adjacent wine and spirits shop; a drive-through pharmacy; full-service dry cleaning; an Eagle's Nest child care center; a complete Nature's Basket natural and organic department; and a full-service floral and gift accessories department with a Teddy Bear Stuffers kiosk.

The new Giant Eagle will also feature: A wide selection of the region's highest-quality fresh fruits and vegetables, including as many as 25 varieties of peppers, 22 types of tomatoes and 20 varieties of mushrooms; a full-service bakery; more than 400 specialty and gourmet cheeses from around the world; 100 varieties of deli meats, salads and imported olives and antipasti; fully-staffed meat and seafood departments including USDA Choice Beef, USDA Prime, Certified Angus Beef, Bell & Evans all-natural poultry and Coleman natural beef, as well as farm-raised and wild salmon, Mahi Mahi, and fresh shrimp and crab.

Customers will also be able to tap Giant Eagle's fuelperks! Program, which offers 10 cents in GetGo fuel rewards with every $50 in supermarket purchases with a Giant Eagle Advantage Card. In-store banking will also be available, as will an on-site photo processing lab offering quick, picture-perfect film development, digital capabilities and overnight film processing seven days a week through convenient drop boxes.

A 6,100-square-foot, Pennsylvania state-controlled wine and spirits shop is another highlight of Giant Eagle's new addition. "The Seven Fields One Stop Shop is the largest of our stores within supermarkets in western Pennsylvania," said Pa. Liquor Control Board chairman Jonathan Newman.

The grand opening celebration will include special events and food sampling throughout the month, including: a sweepstakes for a picnic for 12 guests complete with food from across the entire supermarket; a BBQ meal package with a variety of delicious meats and side dishes; a Meal Makeover personalized nutritional analysis with Giant Eagle food and nutrition advisor Judy Dodd; and a children's kitchen set. Weekend family entertainment will include a local radio personality, musicians, a magician, and a stilt walker.

Giant Eagle Inc., one of the nation's largest food retailers and food distributors with more than $5.2 billion in annual sales, operates 140 corporate and 81 independently owned and operated stores throughout western Pennsylvania, Ohio, north central West Virginia and Maryland.
