Evidence of Giant Eagle’s evolving eco-friendly efforts are on display in a big way in its third Market District location that opened to much fanfare in late 2009. Built on a reclaimed coal mine, the 150,000-square-foot destination store earned rapid designation as the first supermarket in Pennsylvania to obtain EPA’s gold-level certification award for green refrigeration technology — a feat that follows in a long line of accolades from the federal agency, which also recently recognized Giant Eagle as Energy Star Retail Partner of the Year.
