Giant Eagle Honored With U.S. Labor Dept. Award
PITTSBURGH -- The U.S. Department of Labor will honor Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle with the New Freedom Initiative Award for its outstanding employment practices toward people with disabilities.
The award recognizes exemplary and innovative public-private partnership efforts that further the disability employment objectives of President George W. Bush's New Freedom Initiative.
Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao will present the award to five businesses, four nonprofit organizations, and one individual at a Oct. 16 luncheon in Washington, D.C.
"Giant Eagle is honored to receive this distinguished award," said Giant Eagle s.v.p./retail operations Laura Karet. "We employ, develop, and promote the most qualified people on the basis of performance, experience, and ability, on an equal opportunity basis."
Giant Eagle was chosen as a recipient for the New Freedom Initiative Award because of its unique programs dedicated to providing support for its employees with disabilities.
"Project Opportunity," established in 1991, specifically identifies students in the Pittsburgh public school system with visual, hearing, and mobility challenges, as well as students with emotional and learning disabilities. The community project is a school-to-work program mentoring these students through three training phases, ultimately resulting in permanent employment.
